Past Projects #3

This is probably my favorite dress that I've made myself recently (recently as in a year ago, actually). It was my going away dress for my wedding. I love it, but it takes so much fabric, and so long to cut out, and hem, that I will probably not do another one.

And an action shot:

(Yes, our "getaway vehicle" was my a truck. We drove it to where the car was parked and went on from there.)It isn't a vintage pattern (it was McCalls, darn if I remember the number), but it has a very retro look, to me. It's a wrap dress, so at least it didn't have a zipper, but the circle skirt was a big pain to hem. It wraps very far over, and even on a windy day it doesn't come unwrapped, however, so I guess all that fabric and hemming was necessary.

Awww...I love that dress. It's a shame you don't want to make more. Your action shot is cute too. If you even find that pattern # you'll have to post it.

I really liked that dress but I had no idea that you had made it. Cool! Those wrap dresses are really in style right now.

Shoulda left the cattle trailer on there. Now that would have been a hoot. Not to mention a little smelly.

I was searching the web for ideas to make a 1950's dress for my friend, when I happened upon your site. I fell instantly in love with that red dress!I have been sewing for years,(mostly Halloween costumes, curtains, bible covers and such), but now I'm attepting "real" clothes. The first thing I've done is a sundress with a drawstring neck(I made a matching one for my grand-daughter). My next project will be the long skirt cut higher in the front with the ruffle, then I would like to try "the dress". I've never used a pattern, I just kind of wing it. If all goes well, I'll send you pics.

I love your dress. If you come across it I sure would like to know the pattern number. I am looking for a wrap with plenty of coverage. One of my most embarrasing moments ever, involved a wrap skirt and a windy day :)

It is McCall 5314. If you go to www.patternreview.com there are several reviews of it that might be helpful when sewing it up (including mine).

Thanks for the info on pattern number. I like your dress better than the ones on the pattern envelope. I left the pattern dating information on the sew retro blog.
